Zhang Baibo was born in Qingdao, China, in 1944 and started studying the art of engraving in 1963. His medium is the Colored Relief – Engraving. In Baibo’s innovative technique engravings are cut on plates of plaster of Paris, resulting in images that have the sculptural quality of bas-relief work.

He learned Chinese traditional art style by studying the paintings and stone engravings of the Han Dynasty (206B.C. to 220 A.D.) His work, while decidedly Chinese, has a universal appeal due to his sophisticated color and design sense and the unique effect of bas-relief. A much-awarded artist, Baibo has exhibited in many countries, including the United States, Australia, Japan, Canada, France, Germany, and India, among many others. A documentary film about Baibo,“Chinese Colored Relief-Engraving”, has been translated into 6 languages and circulated around the world.
