Paul Shapiro was born December 26, 1939 in Boston, MA. He attended Northeastern University. Boston, MA 1957-58 and School of Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA. 1959
Shapiro was steeped in the Abstract Expressionism of the late '60s when he saw an exhibition of early 20th Century Expressionism painters at the Museum of Modern Art in Paris in 1970. It was a life changing experience for him. He spent the next 20 years perfecting the landscape, creating a deeply personal vision as he went. Like the Fauve painters, Shapiro's bold color became an outlet for his emotional response to the subject. Shapiro's spontaneous gesture lines and brush strokes are expressive of energy; living entities in themselves.
In 1982, he moved to Santa Fe, which resulted in his total commitment to landscape and figure painting for the remainder of the decade. Since then, he has become one of Santa Fe"s most notable landscape painters with an expressionistic style
Shapiro returned to Abstract painting Shapiro explains'' A lot of the abstract work I have been doing has something embedded in it that has elements of the landscape or the figure. It's not specific, but there is still a sense of something there because of the relationships among color, space and form.''
