Skol, Greg
Greg Skol was born in New York City in 1961. He paints small translucent landscapes, which he describes as "meditations on nature." He is most interested in capturing the beautiful colors that appear on the landscape, especially those which occur at twilight. Each oil painting is intended to be a quiet interpretation of perfect fields, mountains, rivers and valleys.
His paintings are generally small and often have an unusual square format. From a distance, the viewer can enjoy the general beauty and glow of a Greg Skol painting. On closer inspection, one can see the detail and unique surface of the work.
Skol artist is very interested in the way the light plays on the landscape and in creating an ethereal quality reflecting the stillness and beauty of nature.
Although Skol begins with a rough sketch and a few notes about the site, he relies on his memory to convey an evocation of the place. He is more interested in creating a "state of mind" and capturing a "feeling at a particular time" than depicting what one might see through the lens of a camera.
He now lives and works in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
