Guardipee, Terrance
Terrance Guardipee was born on the Blackfeet Reservation in northern Montana
and lived there until he was accepted to the Institute of American Indian Arts in
Santa Fe, NM.
Terrance Guardipee is renowned for his authentic Blackfeet images that he originally
translates into his own contemporary form of ledger art. Terrance has evolved the
ledger art form from the traditional single page style by incorporating other antique
documents such as maps, war rations, checks, receipts and most notably, historical
Blackfeet Nation papers. The innovation Terrance has demonstrated in his artwork
has been internationally recognized by numerous museums, shows and private
collectors. His work is featured in the permanent collections at the National Museum
of the American Indian of the Smithsonian Institute, the Gene Autry Museum, the
Museum of Arts and Culture in Santa Fe, NM, the Hockaday Museum, the Dakota
Museum, the Hood Museum of Dartmouth, the CM Russell Museum, the Museum
of Natural History in Hanover, Germany, etc. In 2009, the Santa Fe Indian Art Market
established a competition category specifically for ledger art and Terrance Guardipee
won first in this category. Terrance was also a featured artist for the 2008 50th
Anniversary Heard Museum Indian Art Market and created "The Black Horse Society",
one of the ponies for The Trail of the Painted Ponies.
